Please note this is a full time course for 18 year olds who have already achieved the relevant Level 3 qualifications.

The Foundation Diploma in Art & Design is designed to help learners further develop an understanding of historical, contemporary and related contexts to inspire their own art work. The course prepares students for a higher education degree in an Art & Design subject.

The course will prepare students to the realities of working in the creative sector.

Units 1-3 and 7-9 are pass only. Unit 10 (Final Major Project) is graded Pass/Merit/Distinction. Assessment is continuous throughout the one-year course.

Entry Requirements

  1. At least one Art & Design A-level (3D Design, Graphics Design, Fine Art, Photography or Textiles) or BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma (or larger BTEC qualifcation) in Art & Design at Merit or above
  2. At least five GCSE qualifications at C grade or above including English Language & Mathematics
  3. A portfolio of work which demonstrates that the student has achieved a standard that will enable them to benefit from the course.


Students in the first term will study a range of art & design disciplines: 3D Design, Fine Art, Textiles, Photography and Graphics. In the second term students will choose a specialist subject focus and complete their final project. At the end of the course there will be an exhibition which will showcase the students work.


The course is one-year and project-based that allows learners to develop portfolios to give them the best possible chance of getting a place at Art School or other HE institutions at Degree level. Also, students who are seeking progression into appropriate creative industry employment opportunities.
