You will study theory and practical work that will help you to progress on to A-Level Biology or AQA Applied Science Level 3 including modules

Assessment is by examination but you will be expected to carry out practical work in the Biology laboratory that will help you in your future studies and career.

GCSE Biology may be studied alongside BTEC Level 2 or 3 Health and Social Care, other science subjects including GCSE Physics, Level 2 Social Sciences, Level 2 Criminology and Level 2 Psychology.


Two written exams, both 1 hour 45 minutes, equally weighted.

Entry Requirements

Grade 3 in at least one Science at GCSE and other GCSE qualifications at grade 3 and 4 or BTEC qualifications at Level 2 of Merit or above.


Content is split into six teaching topics and a practical activity skills topic:

Topic B1: Cell level systems

Topic B2: Scaling up

Topic B3: Organism level systems

Topic B4: Community level systems

Topic B5: Genes, inheritance and selection

Topic B6: Global challenges

Topic B7: Practical skills


Progression on to A-level Biology, AQA Applied Science Level 3, A level Psychology and BTEC Health and Social Care courses at Level 3.
