The course is chosen as a way for students to experience Engineering and by achieving a distinction is a pathway to the BTEC Level 3 Engineering course. The course contains a good array of topics within engineering that provide you with an overview of Engineering and its applications in the world.


One unit of the four studied is externally assessed by means of a computer-based exam. The remaining units are assessed by coursework marked in college.

Entry Requirements

Grade 3 in both GCSE Maths & Physics.

This course is designed for students to progress to the Engineering BTEC Level 3 and may be studied alongside GCSE Physics. For information please see entry requirements for Engineering BTEC Level 3.


One year single block course covering:

  • The efficiency, choices, and materials of an engineering process.
  • Researching and developing engineering products – emphasising ethical and environmental impact.
  • Understanding the importance of inspection and maintenance of products.
  • Materials and the way they shape the engineering world and production.


    The subject allows students to progress onto the Level 3 Engineering course but also allows access to some engineering apprenticeship opportunities.
