The Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Engineering are intended to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals who are able to meet the demands of employers in the rapidly evolving engineering sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. The qualifications will also widen access to higher education and enhance career prospects for those who undertake them.

It gives learners the opportunity to:

● develop the core knowledge and skills that all engineers require, irrespective of future specialisms

● develop the skills necessary to fault find and problem solve in a timely, professional manner, contributing to the development of the process and the environment that they work in

● understand the responsibilities of the engineer within society, and work with integrity, regard for cost, sustainability and the rapid rate of change experienced in world class engineering

● make progress towards achieving internationally recognised registration with a professional Body regulated by the Engineering Council


The Higher National Certificate in Engineering is a 120 credit qualification, made up of 8 units each with a value of 15 credits. There is a required mix of core, specialist and optional units, some of which are yet to be finalised. The core provision includes:

• Engineering Design

• Engineering Maths

• Engineering Science

• Managing a Professional Engineering Project

Entry Requirements

Students applying for this qualification must have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths and English, and one full A level (or equivalent level BTEC qualification ) in Engineering or another linked qualification (e.g. Physics or Maths)


We will offer opportunities for participation in our college Engineering workshops and guest speakers. We will also ensure that you have significant workplace experiences during the course and help support your applications for employment on completion of the course.


The college will assist in helping individuals find experience in engineering and support in applying for apprenticeships and/or university. The Level 4 Certificate offers progression into the workplace. However, you can also progress to a higher level of study, such as a Level 5 qualification to higher education
